Mark Friday, leveraging his background as an electrical engineer, has steered his career towards early-stage startup investments. As the Managing Director at Cathexis Ventures since 2018, based in Houston, Texas, his focus remains on identifying and nurturing scalable startups. Cathexis Ventures takes a collaborative approach with other venture firms and family offices to make dozens of new investments each year in seed stage companies. At Cathexis Ventures, Mark’s seed stage investment strategy is shaped by macroeconomics and is focused on finding talented and efficient founders with early signs of product market fit.
Cathexis Ventures is a Subsidiary Cathexis, a single-member family office with $1B + AUM. Cathexis is a private investment firm managing assets in energy, real estate, and various other sectors. Built on a foundation of multi-generational family assets, Cathexis practices a value investment philosophy with a long-term time horizon. Prior to his career in venture investments, Mark practiced as an engineer for a decade. He designed control systems, communication networks, and security networks at Shrader Engineering prior to its acquisition by mining company Hatch. Mark served as a Tech Project Manager at Hatch from October 2017 to June 2018 in the Houston, Texas Area. Mark increasingly specialized in wireless networks, machine vision, security networks, smart cities, and control systems. Mark began is career at Lockheed Martin in a research and development role from June 2008 to June 2010. He researched applications of embedding sensors in composite materials for more efficient maintenance on the F-35. These sensors automate the detection of structural health defects, streamlining maintenance decisions.
